
Michelle Peterson, Ph.D. specializes in assessment for children, adolescents, and adult assessments. Dr. Peterson earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of South Carolina and is currently a licensed clinical psychologist in South Carolina. Dr. Peterson completed a Master’s Degree in Psychology at the University of South Carolina and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She completed her predoctoral internship at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia.
During her internship training she worked with children at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, providing inpatient and outpatient therapeutic services. Dr. Peterson worked alongside psychiatrists, pediatricians, social workers, and other health professionals to provide comprehensive integrated services to children. She also gained experience providing brief psychological assessment and psychotherapy with adults in the hospital setting and administered pre-bariatric surgery psychological evaluations. Through graduate school and internship, Dr. Peterson also obtained specialty training in neuropsychological assessment as well as training related to the diagnosis of ADHD, Autism, and other developmental disorders.
After her internship, Dr. Peterson worked as an Associate at Comprehensive Psychological Services for four years, conducting assessments for children, adolescents, and adults. Various conditions were investigated such as ADHD, Bipolar, Autism, Schizophrenia, Depression, and Anxiety. Referral sources at Comp Psych included state agencies (e.g., Department of Disability Services) as well as private medical offices. From mid-2015 to 2016, Dr. Peterson worked part-time at Columbia Psychiatric Associates conducting therapy services for all ages using a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach. From late 2016 to late 2019, Dr. Peterson provded psychological testing and treatment services at Midlands Psychiatry. Presently, Dr. Peterson works full-time at Columbia Psychiatric Associates conducting testing for individuals ages six and older.
Additional experience includes work in the area of physical health promotion among youth and adults. Dr. Peterson has a number of peer-reviewed journal publications in the areas of childhood physical activity and obesity. She is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the South Carolina Psychological Association (SCPA).
